Martin Chalfie (born January 15, 1947) won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2008 for the discovery and development of  the green fluorescent protein, GFP.  

Chalfie, originally from Chicago moved to Skokie when he was 8 years old with his parents and 2 brothers.  Chalfie attended Niles Township East High School, he graduated in 1965. Chalfie kept himself busy while at Niles East: he was a study hall period supervisor, president of the Senior Cabinet, on the swim team, a member of the N-Club letterman organization, on the Chemistry Advisory Board, and a member of the National Honor Society. 

Chalfie went on to major in Biochemistry at Harvard, during which time he spent a summer  gaining research experience at the University of Illinois at Chicago's Biochemistry Department
