Contrary to the picture often ‘painted’ by today’s media, young people do not all have great self-confidence and are not disproportionately disruptive, unruly, lazy, dangerous and rude. 

Today’s young people face many challenges on their road to adulthood.  Compared to previous generations, they may face greater levels of parental unemployment, a greater percentage of lone-parent families, huge competition for every job vacancy, a proliferation of dubious role-models and the negative stereo-typing of young people to name just a few.

Everyone can benefit from having somewhere that provides opportunities to develop existing skills, learn new ones, meet and make new friends outside their current group, learn how to get along with people of all ages and abilities and be part of making a positive difference to other people’s lives.

Scarborough YMCA has been providing these opportunities for many decades.

In addition, our engaging, life-enhancing activities help to improve self-confidence, self-worth and practical ways to improve employment prospects.

All YMCAs are locally managed to respond to the needs of the community. In Scarborough we have developed a strong reputation for engaging people of all ages in a variety of activities including dance, singing, sport, arts and volunteering, as well as on- and off-stage opportunities in our 290-seat community theatre.

As well as being home to a number of Dance and Performance Schools, we offer meeting rooms, dance studios and a gymnasium for hire. We also offer Ju Jitsu, Fencing and Musical Theatre classes and Krashlabs are based at the YMCA.

We have a very well-equipped 290-seat theatre which plays host to numerous productions each year.
