"Powhatan Manufacturing Company" formed on June 1st, 1874.  Formed for the purpose of general milling and cotton factory.  Amount of capital stock was Twenty Thousand dollars with actual amount paid of Thirteen Thousand dollars.  Thirty-six stockholders had various amounts of stock, with Albert W. Williams holding the largest amount of 440 shares. 

In 1859, J.B. Arendale and T.J. McPherson purchased the steam saw mill at Powhatan.3

In 1889, the Darter Brothers completed a new "single mill" near "Powhattan." It had a capacity of over 100,000 feet.4

In December of 1902, Judge L.B. Poindexter wrote to Agricultural Commissioners H.T. Bradford about the industry of Lawrence County. In his writing, he mentions the following mills located in Powhatan:

  • C.C. Hall: Large sawmill, cutting wagon and car material.
  • Stuart and Darter, cutting wagon and car material
  • Munger and Walrod, cutting wagon and car material.2
