The Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education is a non-profit dedicated to "helping the news media accurately portray all segments of society, particularly those often overlooked, such as communities of color." 1

The first classes were at UC Berkeley in 1976. It was formally incorporated in 1977 by Robert C. Maynard and his wife Nancy Maynard as the Institute for Journalism Education. After Robert Maynard's death in 1993, it was renamed in his memory.

Today, Maynard's daughter Dori J. Maynard is president and CEO.
