<—back to Oakland Wiki Meeting Notes

Notes from previous meeting.

People

Julio, Mike, Diana, Marina

Summary

  • Debrief from Saturday, July 20th, 10a-4p: Peralta Hacienda Editathon at the Peralta Hacienda Historical Park
    • Peralta Hacienda has a sweet meeting space and Beverly (the organizer) is down to have us back on a regular basis!
    • Some of our hacker types want to meet again to hack on localwiki software. They have proposed Aug. 3rd.
    • Prep materials for display at Peralta & flyers for hanging around the neighborhood.
    • Need waaaay better publicity.
    • Theme was scattered.
    • Future ideas: send people on recon to get raw data on things that are nearby in the neighborhood and come back and add them!
  • Julio is more involved with the Longfellow Community Association now and is working on documenting all the businesses in Longfellow. This is leading up to an event that LCA wants to have with local businesses where they are brought together and talk about what they need to improve.

    JULIO -

Will keep using the wiki and try to bring businesses in to the process closer to the event.

  • Future of “Editathons”
    • Sense of dissatisfaction with the term “editathon.” It’s difficult to say, difficult to spell, and maybe not the best because people don’t know what it is. Suggestion to change the name of the kinds of events that we do that involve showing people how to edit and editing together. “Edit Party” is good, but not quite appropriate for things like events at the History Room.
    • Diana suggested calling them “wiki days” in the style of “Oakland Wiki Day at Peralta Hacienda.” Everyone approved and we would like to start using this term when planning future events!
  • Marina discussed the new localwiki strategy: http://localwiki.org/blog/2013/jul/25/big-news-future-localwiki/
  • Templates:
    • should have an auto tag with the templates.
    • list of templates should be broad. or tailor only to new users type topics. make them fewer
      • no need for template for meeting minutes.
    • Marina: minimize or do away with templates. Sometimes too rigid — pre-existing forms may inhibit content. Sometimes meaning gets lost.
      • note from gk: i’d like to keep the council member template. it helps me with the historic councilmembers that don’t come up very much in other stuff. as we get closer to the newer ones it becomes less useful, like the current ones- it’s probably not a useful format.
      • the 2014 mayoral candidate template was one that tonya and i came up with as part of the Very Official and Fancy 2014 mayor election team. it’s very much a work in progress, but please leave it :)
    • how specific should templates be? Start with things that are the same - you can still add extras. but have basic info for templates. then stubs can look the same.
    • templates as xml? so machine can parse it out. unformatted / structured data.
    • JULIO - will email list to check in about templates. and will take steps to simplify.
  • HTML - may want terms / definitions.
  • Alliances
    • Oakland Heritage Alliance - Mike going on walks with this group. lots of overlapping interest with Oakland Wiki.
      • talking points always evolving. similar to wiki.
    • needs a champion of the project to see their own vision for it and how they would like to participate. finally, ownership over it.
    • Diana will also follow up with Beverly on Peralta Hacienda
  • Meetings should have time for editing. Open-ended space.
    • Tuesday night. Marina will be at the Oakland City Council Meeting.
    • Agenda before meeting? Minutes after. JULIO - will do this.
  • No editathon Tuesday the 30th
  • Anti-Racism resources in Oakland list. IVAN is starting that.

Future

  • Party at Hearth: tentatively planned for August 11. Marina will plan.
  • Oakland Wiki Logo Skateboard to identify/advertise ourselves at editathon: Ivan/Marina/Diana

What do people want to do with the further future?

These are all fantastic ideas and there is so much work to do, but what are people really interested in pursuing? What are we interested in and what do we have time to commit to? Here are some ideas that have been identified:

  • Rethinking the Front Page
    • Can a brotha get a “random page” button?
  • New wording for “What we’ve been up to” (Vicky)
  • About Oakland Wiki
  • Stealth People Page:
    • Contributors who edit a lot, but don’t come to meeting [Watch out JL, I think this means you ;^)]
  • Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights Editathon
    • Diana is maybe possibly making shoutouts to people. Greenkozi, you interested? - yes, but i don’t nkow that i have enough time to do much outreach. happy to be a leader at the event if it’s scheduled at the right time.
  • Oral History Event @ Sudoroom
    • Ivan will email about Tina Tamale oral history. No Update
    • Ivan will also reach out to Estelle Clemens. Community Action Partnership Experience on War on Poverty
    • Grocery Outlet Cheese?
    • Aiming for August
  • Youth Radio - just starting conversation. Kids in finals and vacation. No kids right now. working on a new website. Will be good to continue the conversation.
    • launching an app where kids submit their own stories. and how that might be tied to the wiki. No Update
  • TechLiminal has expressed interest in hosting an Oakland Wiki event with their clients
  • Need to consolidate Events pages
    • Future Events Ideas - just ideas.…not yet set.
    • Events that are upcoming / past
    • What we have been up to - features of past events
    • Events by Month - may need to clean up events listings for current year to focus on significant historical events (like Brown dissolves redevelopment funds) rather than periodic happenings (like Dan Kalb Listening Session on Feb 28, 2013)
    • Event Notes Pages - Notes from meetings attended.
  • Housing Justice Editathon: Causa Justa
    • Diana also emailed Patricia Zamora. No response.
