Chapman was born about 1904, to [?] Chapman and Mary E. Pierson (Chapman) (July 17, 1880 – March 4, 1958). Records vary; she was born either in Arkansas or California. In 1920, she was living at 1954 E. 21st Street with her aunt, Katie Pierson (McKenzie) and Katie's husband Joseph McKenzie, and her uncle, James Aubrey Pierson. In 1930, she was living at 930 Apgar with her mother and her uncle James. In 1940, she was living at 3422 West Street with her mother.

Chapman may have attended Fremont High School, class of June 1923.

Chapman was an accomplished tennis player. 3,4
