Willard Boyce was co-owner of Boyce and Roberson, coal and wood dealer; with Charles F. Roberson, he at one time owned the land on which the Rumsey Cottage was built. He was also the superintendent of the Saranac Inn for forty-two years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

A Willard J. Boyce is listed on the World War I Veterans plaque at Church and River Streets.

In 1927, Boyce was trampled by a heavy draft horse at Saranac Inn, where he lived. He owned a race horse named Frida K., a black mare who did well in local races.

He hanged himself in a garage under the stables at the Saranac Inn. He had become despondent over the course of a long illness (tuberculosis?).
