JAMES MEAGHER DIES AT AGE 65

James H. Meagher, whose retirement from 34 years of service to Saranac Lake as village treasurer became effective last week, died last night at Saranac Lake General Hospital.

When Mr. Meagher was honored, about a month ago, at a dinner sponsored by the Lions Club, Mayor Alton B. Anderson and former mayors, Thomas P. Ward and Frank Ratigan, paid tribute to Mr. Meagher's dedicated service to the community. Mayor Anderson said this morning, "The Village has lost a very faithful servant."

He was born on February 6, 1893 in Brooklyn, a son of Michael and Margaret Egan Meagher. He was graduated from St. Francis High School and attended St. Francis College in Brooklyn. On November 20, 1905, he and Clara Hormby [sic] were married and they came to Saranac Lake 42 years ago and made their home at 17 McClelland Street.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Meagher is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Doris Schmidt of Kingstown, R.I., Mrs. Bernice Niccolls of Hicksville, Mrs. Ilene Grady of Lake Placid, Mrs. June J Houlton of Watervliet, Mrs. Carolyn Shaheen of Tupper Lake and five sons, Gerald of Baltimore, Md., Albert of Gretna, La., Arthur and Vincent of Rochester, Ralph of Saranac Lake and Bernard of Brooklyn.

He is also survived by 25 grandchildren, two brothers, Valentine and Michael, and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret McCabe and Mrs. Katherine Carter, all of Brooklyn. Friends may call at the Fortune Funeral Home where there will be Rosary Service at 8 p.m. Friday. Requiem High Mass will be offered at St. Bernard's Church a 10 a.m. Saturday. Interment will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery.
