SARANAC LAKE – Herbert E. Safford, at, of Onchiota died Wednesday morning at Saranac Lake General Hospital. He was born on August 4, 1905 in Belmont, N.Y., the son of Alfred and Lillian Russell Safford.

He had been a resident of Onchiota for 43 years and had been employed as a caretaker for Camp Meenagha, a private camp for boys located in Onchiota, for 21 years.

Mr. Safford is survived by his wife, the former Edith Hawkins; a son, Sgt. John Safford, New York State Police from Malone; three brothers, Floyd and Lee of Malone, Truman of Helena; four sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Avery of Fayettville, Mrs. Lena Brooks and Mrs. Vivian Martin both of Massena, Mrs. Gladys Hayes, Bloomingdale; three grand-daughters and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call this afternoon and evening at Fortune's Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be said Friday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Eric King, pastor of Saranac Lake Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment will be in Morningside Cemetery in Malone in May.
