Baker Held For Shooting Henry Duffy

Clarence Baker, of Saranac Lake, was arrested Wednesday by Corporal Lefeve and Trooper Feeney on a warrant charging him with manslaughter in connection with the death of Henry Duffy, of Saranac Lake, whom he mistook for a deer and fatally wounded.

Mr. Duffy together with Baker and three other men were making a final drive before the end of the hunting season Thursday and had separated sometime earlier. Mr. Baker saw a movement in leaves from a knoll where he stood and thought it a deer. He fired only to learn a few moments later the bullet had killed Mr. Duffy.

Coroner J. E. Stamatiades, of Brushton, is conducting an inquest into the fatal shooting.

It is expected that Mr. Baker will be arraigned before Police Justice G. A. Utting at Saranac Lake. District Attorney H. W. Main, of Malone, will appear for the people at the hearing.

Mr. Duffy was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Duffy, former residents of Chateaugay, and many friends will be grieved to learn of his untimely demise.

He leaves a wife, five children, five sisters, Mrs. Richard English, of New York city, Mrs. Harry Downs, of Grand Mere, Que., Mrs. David Dillon, of Malone, Mrs. A. B. Hokanson, and Mrs. Charles H. Goldsmith, of Saranac Lake, four brothers, Benjamin, of Rochester, Walter, Robert and Emmett, of Saranac Lake.
