Helen Anderson Brescia was a resident of Saranac Lake since the early 1940s. She moved here to work as a TB nurse at the Ray Brook State Hospital, where she met her husband-to-be, Tony, who was a TB patient at the time. Before the war, she skied at the old Stevens Hill in Lake Placid. She was employed by Will Rogers Hospital, Saranac Lake General Hospital, Ray Brook State Hospital and the Uihlein Mercy Center until her retirement in 1972.

She received her degree as a Registered Nurse at Johnson City. She was a veteran of World War II, having served as a nurse in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 and attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant. She was stationed in Kidderminster, near Birmingham, England.
