Harrington Mills, owner of the Harrington Hotel in Washington, DC, bought the Saranac Inn in 1916 and completely rebuilt the structure, adding two stories, elevators, and a private bath in each room. He carried out further enlargement in the 1920s, with noted Saranac Lake architect William G. Distin doing much of the design work.

HARRINGTON MILLS OF SARANAC DIES IN FLORIDA TUESDAY
Harrington Mills, 64, operator of hotels in New York, Rhode Island, Washington and Florida, died at Daytona Beach, Fla., Tuesday.
Mr. Mills, who is the owner of Saranac Inn, fashionable summer hotel 30 miles from here, was counted among the most successful of the resort hotel men in the country.
Starting his career humbly with a cigar stand concession at the Old Shoreham hotel in New York city, he rose rapidly in the hotel business.
Among the first hotels which he managed was the Grafton in Washington, a residential house which was patronized chiefly by diplomats.
In 1915 or 1918 he built theHarrington, a commercial house in Washington.
As manager of the Whiteface Inn at Lake Placid, he attracted the attention of directors of the Upper Saranac Lake association, owners of Saranac Inn, who in 1912 engaged him to manage their concern.
In 1919 or 1920 he purchased the interest of Dr. Samuel Ward, president of the association.
Among his most successful resort hotels were the Coquena and the Clarendon at Daytona Beach Fla.
It is said he had been ill for less than a week.
Suvivors include his wife and three daughters. Mr. Mills was twice married, his first wife having died several years ago.

OWNER OF SARANAC INN DIES AT DATONA BEACH
Harrington Mills, 64, owner and operator of Saranac Inn on Upper Saranac Lake, and of hotels in New York, Rhode Island, Washington and Florida, died Tuesday at the Claredon Hotel, Daytona Beach, Fla.
Mr. Mills was well known through out the Adirondacks and Northern New York as one of the most successful hotel men in this section.
It was while he was manager of Whiteface Inn at Lake Placid that he attracted the attention of the directors of the Upper Saranac Lake Association, owners of Saranac Inn and in 1912 he was engaged to manage their hotel. In 1920 he purchased the interest of Dr. Samuel Ward, president of the association.
Mr. Mills owned two hotels in Daytona Beach, the Coquena and the Clarendon. He was at the Clarendon during his last illness.
