Edward Scharmer
Edward Scharmer, of Saranac Lake, died peacefully at Mercy Skilled Nursing Facility on June 26, 2023.
Ed was born in Brooklyn in 1934, the son of Mary (O’Hare) and Herman Scharmer.
He lived in Rosendale throughout his childhood and graduated from Kingston High School in 1951. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956 and later attended Michigan State University, earning an electrical engineering degree. He was employed by IBM Corporation for 33 years until his retirement in 1989.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara (George), his son Eric (Isabel) Scharmer, his daughter Lory (Scott) Van Woert, and five grandchildren: Janet, Celia and Eliza Scharmer, and Andrew and Alexander Van Woert.
After retirement he and his wife moved to Saranac Lake. He served on a variety of local boards and non-profit groups including Rotary Club, Community Revitalization Group, Board of Assessment Review, local food pantry, Historic Saranac Lake and Saranac Village at Will Rogers.
He joined the Ice Palace army of volunteers for many years and was the Build Committee chairman for 12 of them. He loved this project, the work and the Carnival. He particularly respected the community’s teamwork and commitment to the palace construction each year.
An outdoor enthusiast, he enjoyed camping, fishing, hiking, paddling and skiing. His favorite vehicle was a motorcycle — he and Barb traveled in nearly all the eastern U.S. states, several regions in Canada, and especially enjoyed riding in the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains. He was a fixer and builder of many things — including his house — and an accomplished woodworker.
Affectionately deemed a “flatlander” sometimes, he nonetheless adopted Saranac Lake as his first hometown, and rarely missed an SLCS football game.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, 20 Church St., Saranac Lake, NY 12983. A celebration of Ed’s life will be held when families can be together. Memorial donations in Ed’s memory may be made to the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Committee or North County Life Flight in care of the funeral home.
