Edmund Lyon was a noted Rochester inventor, humanitarian, philanthropist, and manufacturer. Among his inventions was the electric starting motor for automobile engines. He became involved in education for the deaf, and founded the Rochester School for the Deaf and Dumb.
He bought the Alfred White camp, Camp Restawhile, on Deer Island, Upper Saranac Lake in 1917. He renamed it Bircholm. His descendants still own part of the property.
He was acquainted with Alexander Graham Bell and Helen Keller.
