Miss Alice Pierce, Bloomingdale

Alice Pierce was born on a farm on the Bloomingdale road, Vermontville, Feb. 14, 1867, where she resided with her father and mother, the Hon. James H. Pierce and wife, until about 1878 when they moved to the village of Bloomingdale. They occupied a new hotel, the St. Armand House, which Mr. Pierce had built not long before. He later purchased the home and lot on State street where the family has since lived. And where Miss Alice Pierce died.

Miss Pierce received her education in the village school and her musical education, piano lessons at first, from a Saranac Lake teacher. She spent the winter of 1897-98 in Albany with her father, who was a member of the State Assembly at that time, and continued lessons there. Later she took vocal lessons from Prof. McKinley of New York city, who brought his class of students to Bloomingdale each summer.

She was employed at the postoffice at Bloomingdale prior to her sickness about 18 years ago, from which time she was a semi-invalid unable to walk, because of rheumatism. It was rheumatism which caused her death Aug. 15, 1945. She was a faithful member of the Bloomingdale Episcopal church.

Miss Pierce sent news to the Republican for many years prior to her death.
