2007-11-25 20:57:53 Just got back from the grand opening. I give em a solid 'B'. The meat in the burgers was fantastic... 1/2 lb. Niman ranch cooked a nice bloody rare, with a charred crust. However, the condiments didn't do the patty justice. The bun was underwhelming (like something you'd buy by the hundred at Sam's club for a charity cookout), and the garlic fries can't even touch Sudwerk's. They need to do something to differentiate themselves from the competition. How about sweet potato fries? To my knowledge no one in Davis has that. Service: Full table service in a place like this is just silly. They actually did a a great job considering the mayhem of opening night, but why not import the service model of Crepeville? That would fit the menu and pricing scheme much better. I must note that the staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. A big plus. Now onto the beer: They've got a solid selection of bottled beers, but the prices are similar to Bistro 33's. The draft selection is solid but needs some surprises... how about a microbrew IPA? There's already plenty of places I can go to overpay for a pint of Sierra Nevada or Anchor Steam in town. Also, how about offering 1/2 liter and liter beers? Overall this place has a ton of potential. They have a wonderful-quality beef patty and they need to build on that. At $6-$7 for a burger with fries, they have some room to offer higher quality accouterments, raise the price a dollar or two, and still offer an incredible value. Fix these things and I will eat and/or drink here 2 to 3 nights a week. Otherwise, I'll just go to Sudwerk. —BillyBudd

2007-11-26 00:39:15 8 out of 10 My woman was kind enough to take me to lunch here on their opening day. Classy interior and nicely heated outside porch area (+ a REAL gas fireplace! man....i hella love fire....hella) The place still smelled of wood varnish and paint, but understandable since we were literally the second paying customers. Despite the lack of credit card service (one waitress said they might be taking cards by Tuesday? 11/28) my lady friend and I were very pleased with our burger, sandwich and regular fries. I'd say the prices are justified for the fancy-pants quality and style that lies somewhere between The Habit and Bistro 33. For portions think slightly smaller than Sudwerks-size. I didn't sample the taps but the selections were decent considering the size of the place. Overall I'd recommend B&B, if only for the fact they'll be one of the few joints open until 3am thurs-sat downtown. 2007-11-26 15:58:31 I at dinner at B&B on sunday evening and it was an overall great experience. I have been walking by this place for months, watching it get put together piece by piece and I must say that I had some high expectations. It definitely satisfied those expectations. The food was great, and resonably priced. I wouldn't change anything yet. The only thing was that the service was slow, but I expected this because they have just opened and haven't worked out the kinks in the system yet. —GeorgeLewis
2007-11-26 18:23:18 I ate at Burgers and Brew for dinner tonight, and here are my thoughts. Pros: Great atmosphere, good food, good location, decent prices. Cons: Small tables, iceburg lettuce on the burgers, "garlic fries" just had garlic salt on top of them. I had the mushroom onion burger which was very tasty. Another friend had the Bacon Jalapeno Cheeseburger which he said left him speechless with delight. Plenty of outdoor heated seating (even a fireplace), limited indoor seating. I would recommend for you to give it a try . . I was especially impressed by the bathroom facilities which was stylishly done and included a dimmer light, oooh. —MissL

2007-11-27 21:53:13 What can be said that hasn't already? I'll sum up my thoughts (basically a compilation of others' opinions which I echo).
-Solid patty, decent bun, sorry condiments. I had the jalapeño bacon burger which was admittedly tasty. The bacon on it was nice and thick, they also put actual good jalapenos in it — thumbs up to that. However as good as it was, you just know it could be even better if they'd sprung for something like arugula or really anything other than iceberg lettuce and other mediocre condiments. The patty is a 1/2 lb. of pure Niman ranch deliciouness, why not do it justice with its supporting cast? Speaking of, they got to get a bun that holds up to that patty better. -Great ambiance. The place is tiny but looks great. If you get a table under the heater, it's not bad sitting outside. The tables are a bit tiny but that's a minor annoyance. -Beer selection *shakes head in shame*. For a place that calls itself "burgers and brew," I was expecting a little more out of the "brew" aspect of the place. Maybe I'm spoiled but I wanted a wider selection of draft choices. Good call on the Chimay Red, but having both Hoegaarden and Blue Moon is redundant. Another couple microbrews would've done it perfectly for me.
All in all, it may look like I'm complaining but I'm really not. The place is good. I'm just a bit disappointed because I had high expectations for it as I've watched it come together day by day, going to school. Really, I know because it's close enough that my roommate and I will be going at least once a week for a burger fix while getting tanked off pitchers of Hoegaarden. —MK

2007-11-28 18:02:32 I went here last night for dinner and it was very good. Everyone has already testified to the food quality, and I agree. Before I say this, let me add that I fully intend to go back many more times. The service was unfortunately poor. Upon entering, my party figured the process would be much like Crepeville (for obvious reasons), in that one orders at the counter, takes a number, then has a seat and gets food delivered. That wasn't the case, the owner apparently decided that waiting tables is more appropriate. I guess he and his brother (the two waiters for the night) are still getting the hang of it. I personally don't have a preference between ordering at the counter and being waited upon, but please, make the experience a good one either way.
P.S. For those who like only a little spice, the bacon cheeseburger with pepper jack cheese is very good. —JeffStuart
2007-11-28 18:11:22 hmm...should i leave a diplomatic comment or be blunt and have people hate me? i think i'll take the risk of the latter. basically, even after requesting service twice, my party had NO ONE come and take our orders for about 30 minutes so we left. they were not that busy but even if they were, 30 minutes is a long time to be waiting for a menu in a burger joint. you can send me a gift card for a complimentary meal and i might come back. —CandiceWang
- When did you go, because the past several nights there has been a sign up on the patio that says order at the counter. I havent tried the place yet, but i walk by it every day as i go to school. I agree that the combination of the posts on wiki and the sign don't really make sense. I wander how new the policy is? -MattHh
- I went two nights ago, and there was indeed wait service on the patio. Yes, service was a little slow, but I chalk this up to the growing pains of a new restaurant, as they figure out how many servers they need, and work out other kinks. I think people should give a new restaurant time before passing judgment on it. Our burgers were excellent, if not prepared exactly how we wanted them (again, I give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that this is due to their newness). I thought the bun was fine; not sure what to say about the iceberg lettuce on the burgers, because if you get a salad with your burger instead of fries, you get mixed greens! So, since they have the greens handy, perhaps you could ask if they could put some on the burger. :-) The heated patio was a lovely place to sit and eat on a cool night, with music playing loud enough to be audible but not so loud as to prevent talking. They have shakes and malts, too — my partner thought ours were a bit thin, but both of us agreed that they were tasty. —CovertProfessor
2007-11-29 00:26:14 I was impressed. Davis needed a place for late-night good eats. The food was great and the beer was cold. What more could you ask for? We did have to wait a while for the food, but I've come to expect that when ordering a grilled chicken sandwich since they're usually frozen and take longer to cook compared to fresh burgers. The owner sincerely apologized for the wait and said they'll speed things up soon. That's good enough for me. The only thing I didn't like is the 'seat yourself' policy. It was quite hard to find a table. On the other hand it didn't really take long for a table to open up and it probably would have taken much longer to be seated if they had a waiting list. 2007-11-29 15:39:52 they're lucky the burgers were so good, and that they got to us just seconds before we were about to leave - 40 MINUTES between ordering time and getting our food. yes, it's a sit down restaurant (at least it was last night), and yes, they were busy, but honestly, i've seen places with that many people and much smaller kitchens get food out way faster. every time i go to crepeville i get annoyed about the "cash only" policy...it makes me not want to eat at either place because not only is that inconvenient, it's SHADY. regardless, the turkey burger was great, the onion rings left a little something to be desired, and the curly fries were amazing (but pretty damn cold by the time we got our food. maybe put the burger in the window, then the fries, instead of putting up the fries and waiting for the burger to be done?). the atmosphere is lovely, but i was freezing since they left the doors open. i think it was warmer on the patio than it was inside. overall, i'd agree with a rating of a solid 'B' —shawna
2007-11-29 18:43:44 Umm...got there at 8:30pm, the place was full, but everyone already had their orders. We seated ourselves just like the sign said, but after waiting for 15minutes and no service, we went directly to the cash register to order. The cashier told us a waiter would be with us shortly and to just stay seated. Waited another 15minutes, no service, we got up and left. No employee seemed to care to keep our business. Unsatisfactory. Comeon, at least take our orders. We didn't even have a chance to order food! Ridiculous given the fact that most people were already serviced. —Papa
2007-11-29 21:10:24 Just went today at 5:40 PM with my girlfriend. Seated ourselves like the sign said, and waited 10 minutes for drinks. Not bad because the place was PACKED. Sat around for another 20 minutes with our drinks and no orders taken. The waitress came by and said she could "maybe" take our order now. Then we asked how long it was going to be and she whispered to us "she is afraid of the manager," and she was scared to ask him. She said she would try and ask, and left us for 20 minutes while we waited around sipping at empty drinks. Never asked the manager anything, avoided us some more, so we finally just got up and paid for our drinks and left. Worst service ever. The waitress seemed like she was avoiding us the whole time and couldn't even take an order. I give this place a B for Boo Boo. —donle
2007-11-30 09:51:03 They're still working out kinks in the system. The last couple nights the computers had been down off and on, so orders were backed up throughout the day/night, including drinks. The food is really good here, so I'd say try it again in a week or so before casting it off due to slow service. —davistudent
2007-11-30 14:06:09 I went there for lunch. The place was packed with a long line. I ordered my burger at the register - the portobello, found a seat and waited around 20 minutes for the food to arrive. The food was really good and worth the wait. I sat inside at one of the bar tables and watched the staff hustle their butts off. The decor was really comfortable. The only thing that I can advise is don't try to have everyone in the office come over for lunch and then expect to take up 6-8 of the 10 available tables. They can provide food-to-go and there is a park across the street that has picnic tables. I went back with friends in the evening and every table was taken by young people who looked like they were parked for the evening. There was a guy at the top of the steps that offered to have us order food to go, but said that there was no more space, so I'll have to see what dinner is like later. —SharlaDaly
2007-11-30 20:41:22 Well lets begin with the fact that the service sucks there...if someone has to wait more than 20 minutes to be helped there is a huge problem. I didn't really enjoy the food at all either. I got a burger and they used iceberg lettuce on it....the burger was real lousy...i would rather go to mcdonalds or to burger kind and i would get a better meal there...and please dont get me started about their philly cheese steak, my boyfriend got that and luckily he was able to hold himself from throwing up. We decided that a better choice for a philly cheese steak is the frozen kind from Sam's club...the food isn't good and neither is the customer service.. —BethMS
2007-11-30 21:08:57 I went to the restaraunt with a party of about 12, so I have to say that I was actually impressed with the service. We had a really helpful waiter and they accomodated our pretty large group for their small seating area. However, the burger was pretty generic, and the condiments were the kind that you take off before you start...Nice mood, but if you're looking specifically for a burger, The Habit, Redrum, or In N Out all have relatively similar quality of burger- with a unique aspect of topping that makes it better than Burgers and Brew. 2007-12-01 13:55:43 I went here last night and it wasn't bad. Good burgers, okay fries - I'm thinking I'll get the onion rings next time. REALLY crowded, though - we had to get our food to-go since there really weren't available tables. I don't know if they have reservations, but if they don't I would get there early or late to avoid waiting for a table. Cons: Slow order line(only 1 register crowded by self-serve water pitchers and traffic from the kitchen,) long wait for food(20-25 min. at 1:30pm on Sat,) dirty silverware, cold onion rings, weak wine list at 2.5 to 4 times retail price, surprising lack of "gourmet" burger types. While I've listed more cons than pros, I will still give it another shot once the crowds die down. I was hoping for something closer to Taylor's Refresher; sadly, I don't think this place will ever compare. —rgraham
2007-12-02 12:25:37 I was anticipating the opening of Burgers and Brew for months. I liked the the cheeseburger and salad I ordered EXCEPT why are the tops buns toasted?
The burger was very difficult to eat because of the hard top bun (couldnt squash the burger flat enough to fit into my mouth). It got crumbs everywhere and scratched up the roof of my mouth. My idea of a great burger does not include a hard, crusty bun. In my opinion the burger at Crepeville is superior to the one I ate at Burgers and Brew. —Chantal
2007-12-02 12:56:57 I had a smoked tofu burger last night that I thought tasted great. My server was good. I will say that the ordering process is kinda weird but I will also give leeway because it was a Saturday night at a brand new business. My date enjoyed her salad. The French fries were good. It is certainly better than Habit and gives Tommy J's a run for its money. Tommy J's has better sauce on the burger but Burgers and Brews does have better vegetarian selections. —RobRoy

2007-12-02 15:40:11 I have been anxiously waiting for Burger and Brew to open.Friday night me and my boyfriend went their for the first time and it was absolutely disgusting.The chicken sandwich comes with chicken that was only half way cooked,and a side order of soggy fries.My boyfreind got the philly cheese steak burger which had cheap meat slobbed on to a crusty bun.Overall for a meal that costs 17.78 it wasnt worth a penny,I could have gone elsewhere and paid less for a better burger.The service also sucked, I was highly dissapointed with everything.It was a waste of 40 minutes and nasty food. —Sandra.
2007-12-03 01:44:31 I went to Burgers and Brew on Friday night at around 7:30pm. There was a line forming at the staircase leading to the entrance when my group got there, so it seems like there is a host during busy hours. The guy managing the line was very courteous and sat us after about 10 minutes. Our beers came relatively quickly (mmm, Hoegaarden!), but the food took a while. I must say that the wait time is a bit long, but I didn't really mind since we had a good amount of people for a conversation.
In terms of looking for new tastes, this place isn't it. What makes this place, though, is the meat. I had the avocado burger, and the meat patty was amazing. Everything else on it tasted what I expected it to taste like (avocado is always good anyway). In terms of price, it's fairly reasonable considering the . I dropped $15 for the burger and brew + tax/tip. If you want to spend less than 10, don't drink beer.

2007-12-03 08:43:22 A lot of people have complained about poor service and I think it's important to differentiate between poor service and a long wait. Poor service is disgruntled or incompetent staff ignoring you or fsking up your order. That is not the case at Burgers and Brew. No amount extra help will shorten the wait if you only have so many table and grills. So if you're going to be an anonymous critic, be specific about the wait and don't just call it "bad service". —JimStewart
2007-12-04 22:34:39 If you want specifics on "bad service" I will give them to you. I have been here several times now, and while I generally enjoy the food and love the ambiance of the place I have left with a bitter taste in my mouth from the repeatedly atrocious service. On three separate visits I was brought the wrong food or someone else's order. On my visit tonight, I arrived with my party and was promptly told to put some tables together myself for my group despite the fact that the place was almost empty and there were plenty of waiters. We were ready to order in under 10 minutes and all ordered easily prepared items. We waited for 30 minutes for our food before the waitress came and told us it would be "just a minute". 15 minutes later most of our food came, but they had gotten the order wrong. 15 minutes after that (and an hour after our initial order ) I got my food. I had ordered the cheese plate specifically because I thought it would be quick to prepare. Apparently there is something extremely complicated about slicing cheese and bread and putting it on a plate that I don't know about. Otherwise I can't figure out why it took an hour. Finally, when we got the check we were charged for food we didn't order. I don't care how much I like a place it is not worth my time and trouble to deal with this kind of incompetence. —Cole

2007-12-05 17:04:15 I went back the other night and my bun was not hard like the time I had commented on earlier. Food was much better this time around. I will say my burger was not cooked nearly enough for my taste, it was nearly all pink, and to me that is unappetizing. Aside from that everything was great.

2007-12-06 13:28:22 My friend and I decided to try this place last night. It seems that they have worked the kinks out. We were seated very promptly and were waited on almost immediately. The only confusing thing was when we first walked up, there was a sign saying "order at the counter" so we started to make our way to the counter. However, a gentleman (I think the owner) stopped us and asked us where we wanted to sit. We chose to eat outside which I recommend. Even though it was a cool evening, I sat there in just my short shirt sleeves. There are heaters hanging from the ceiling and a fireplace which is a nice touch. I ordered the Bacon Jalepeno Cheeseburger and it was delicious. My friend ordered the Portobello Burger and really enjoyed it as well. I think this place has a great future in Davis. —jrsygrl

2007-12-07 08:19:54 Burgers and Brew is definitely an appropriate name for this place. However, when you think of burgers and brew you normally think of a place for sports fans, loud cheering, and lots of drunk obnoxious people such as Froggy’s and/or G Street Pub. However, I was quite taken back when I walked into this place… I would have to say my most favorite thing about this place is the atmosphere and decors. Once could come here with some friends for a nice drink after work.
The dim lights and attention to details such as the peachy ceilings and the nicely displayed glass wine gives the eye such as enjoyment. The only thing I would say is wrong with the interior is probably lack of space in the high chair tables. My friend and I were squished right between the way to the bathroom door and 5 other tables. Every time someone walked to the bathroom door, it would hit our table.
My friend and I started off with a nice cold pint of beers, which was perfect after a long day of work. I decided to order the vegetable chip appetizer that included deep friend potatoes, zucchini, eggplant, and beets. And surprising, beets was my favorite. Oh and it came with a side of ranch sauce. Can’t forget the ranch with all the deep friend goodies.
After reading the reviews on the daviswiki about the service and food, I experienced the opposite, Food was eh, but service was good. The service was great as the place was super packed, but my server was most attentive. My food- I got the jalapeño and bacon burger…..well, I definitely won’t be coming back for the burger. My meat was more raw than I had requested. My burger was falling apart because somehow the bottoms of my bun was soggy . Every time I went to pick it up, it feel apart. And it was bland. There seemed to be no seasoning. I opted not to replace it because I was already full on the curly fires and garlic fries from my friend and my place. Not as crispy and crunchy as I would like… a bit on the soft side, but still edible. The manager and my waitress were very nice about it- they took it off the bill and offered us something in replacement. But after seeing and touching that burger…. I did not want another one. I opted just to finish my fries.
The check came to us quick and our server kept apologizing to the point where I started feeling bad for ever mentioning my burger was way too soggy to eat, but my friend refused to pay $8 bucks for a burger I did not even eat. I assured her it was all ok and that I would definitely return- just not for the burger.
We paid $25 plus tip (and yes they do take debit if it has a Visa or so logo on it)… which is not bad for 2 beers, appetizers, and 2 burgers and fries.
I think though, I rather go to Crepeville (since they are own by the same) and have their yummy chicken curry crepe and strawberry nutella. It would probably come out less…. ☺
Overall, good service, good atmosphere, and good beer. As for burgers, save the $8 and go to in and out or Froggy's!
2007-12-07 18:38:33 I was eagerly awaiting Burgers and Brew's opening especaly since Cantina closed. I used to crave their gorgonzola turkey burger and B&B's is just as delicious! Great location, great food, great beer/wine, great staff, ergo it's always packed whenever I go by. It's clear to see that Zawaydeh and Masoud know exactly what a great restaurant takes. They're in there all the time and are very customer oriented. The attention to detail is spectacular. I love the atmosphere,french fries, onion rings and the fresh iceberg lettuce on the burger as it doen't get soggy or wilt. The menu has a great variety, I can't wait to try everything! Cheese & wine one night, and burger and beer the next! The service is very accommodating and polite. They are definitely going to work out any kinks in the system as they're trying different things to see what works best. They have a happy hour from 3-6 which rocks. I love sitting on the porch and people watching under the warm heat lamps with a cold beer. My hats off to these guys and all the hard working staff who are clearly doing the best than can for a brand new sensationally popular restaurant. Now we just need to get them to add a Ruben sandwich to the menu! —HeatherClaire
2007-12-08 06:15:54 I went here to grab something to go.. sadly didn't have enough funds for a burger (I am poor sometimes) but the prices.. well they were not too bad for the quality, it really is a nicer upscale place for a burger, which they do extremely well, I just had the chili, which was delicious and not a bad to-go meal, the service was fast and pretty friendly, though it was a bit cramped to be standing waiting for a to-go order, perhaps a bit of trouble for the lack of floorspace, but they really have done great things with the little space of the original. The fact they are open so late, and nicely close to campus, a great combination so they will do well in time I hope, the service model is a bit weird for the size.... but eh, it is definitely a good place to go and will offer solid competition against most other burger places in town. —DavidPoole

2007-12-09 20:19:22 I've ordered burgers and shakes to-go from this place twice- 1st time, the burger was awesome and the shake was runny. The second time, they messed up the burger and the shake was still runny. However, the burger mishap only occurred after the owner tried to rush my order along and, due to a miscommunication between he and I, gave me the wrong order. I called, he was super apologetic and immediately offered to remake the burger (and give me another shake if I wanted one!). The remake was perfect (tasty burger with LOTS of even tastier avocado), and both the owner and the staff were more than accommodating from start to finish... and the service was fast and friendly. Overall a great experience...my one recommendation: Thick Shakes! Thick Shakes! Thick Shakes! —AllyAnaheim

2007-12-10 22:01:17 Just got back from B&B...I'd give it an overall 8/10. My wife got the jalepeno cheeseburger, 10+/10, one of the best burgers we've ever had. I got the cheese steak sandwich, I'd have to give it a 6/10, not the best. The kids burgers are HUGE. Service was good (our waitress was very nice and great with my kids), but the outdoor seating in the cold wasn't very fun. They need more heaters!!! 2007-12-12 07:23:59 The garlic fries hella sucked...i mean come on guys you gotta do more than fry up some fries and sprinkle with garlic salt! See Bistro33's garlic fries for a reference. On the other hand my Bacon Jalapeno Burger was AMAZING aside from being a bit on the rare side for a medium rare burger but the high quality of the meat offset this! And my wife's Garden Burger was a solid 9/10!! I know how hard it is to make a Garden Burger taste scrupmtious and B&B nailed it. We also had 2 glasses of the Montage Cabernet and shared a bottle of the 750ml Brother Thelonious both were fantastic but the beer was a smidge on the strong side at 9.4%Alc. I look forward to many more meals at B & B. One more thing, as you walk through the front door steer clear of the 2 tables to your immediate left. They have placed them so close together that most of our dinner was spent playing bumper chairs with the people sitting at the other table along the wall. —Miley
2007-12-12 19:09:50 Been there twice now. Their food (with the exception of maybe the buns) is really good. Their service, however, leaves something to be desired. My roommate and I sat down there (seated by the owner) and waited 15 minutes for someone to come bring us menus. This, despite the fact that 3 of the waiters were just kind of wandering around aimlessly at the time.... Finally, I had to wave down the owner (who also seems to like to loiter around a lot), and he came, apologized, and gave us some menus. The service doesn't suck so much as it is uncoordinated. The food, like I said, is great. Their beef is really tasty, and ordering it medium-rare yields excellent flavor. Their beer battered onion rings are great. Their shakes are good, malts are better. Reasonable prices for a full, stuffing dinner. I haven't had the chance to try out their beer selection yet, but others seem to be pretty content with it. Regular fries are good, but my roommate says the garlic fries aren't anything special. I'd like more pickles with my burger though! —AndrewLeonard
2007-12-29 19:30:44 Burgers are great. Wish they marinated the patty or seasoned it somehow. The garlic fries are waaay too garlic-y. They shouldn't leave your tongue burning. —GeorgeSuarez
2007-12-30 12:05:22 Been there twice. The turkey burger was good, the fish portion of Fish 'n' Chips wasn't. It's the kind of thing you'll find on the frozen food isle at the supermarket, more batter than fish. The fries need work too, right now they're on-par with fast food fries, can we get the steak-cut variety like at Sudwerks? —MultipleMiggs
