Marvin Starks, 1983

Since coming to Champaign from Madisonville, Kentucky, in 1939, Marvin Starks has worked in a variety of jobs including headwaiter at the Champaign Country Club and maitre d' at the Lincoln Room for 22 years. His strongest memories are of the people he's served. "I like the general public," he noted in 1983, "but it takes a lot of patience." After over forty years in the community, he saw better opportunities for Blacks in 1983, "but not as much as they should have." He sees lots of room for improvement in jobs, housing, health, and places of entertainment.
