George W. Johnson was born in approximately 1831 in Missouri. During the Civil War, he served in Company K, 118th USCT, a black regiment organized in Baltimore that participated in the siege of Petersburg and the occupation of Richmond. After the war, Johnson moved to Champaign and worked as a day laborer. He died on 23 January 1885 and is buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Urbana.
