These guidelines have been adapted from localwiki.org

Our community guidelines are here to help us get along and work together as we work on ChaWiki. They are also here to let us know what's "in bounds" and "out of bounds."

DO

Do use ChaWiki to share:

  • local knowledge - everything there is to know about a particular place
  • everybody's knowledge - everyone knows something about the place where they live and ChaWiki is big enough for all of it. There is no piece of local knowledge that's too small.
  • useful, interesting information for residents and visitors alike. From the practical to the academic to the historical, ChaWiki wants to be a great source of information on Chattanooga.
  • information beyond the "official story": include multiple points of view, unique points of view, colloquial knowledge, ideas for how things could be, personal narratives and histories, questions, notes, and experiments.
  • information that's non-commercial in nature.

DO NOT

Do not use ChaWiki for the purpose of being malicious towards a person, place, or object. Mean people suck.

Do not use ChaWiki as a vehicle for commercial promotion or gain. Don't use ChaWiki to promote your business or product.

For-profit businesses are always free to contribute, respond, and help maintain pages about their business on a wiki. These pages are maintained by the community as a whole, and the pages should be written in the voice of the community, not in the voice of the business. Pages about businesses should serve to inform and teach the community as a whole, not promote a particular for-profit business.

What does this mean? This means that adding stuff like promotional material (without any other value, e.g. it's not historical, newsworthy or otherwise interesting) and advertising is generally not okay on pages about for-profit businesses. We tend to consider things like long product price lists to be promotional in nature, but there are exceptions.

If you have questions about this, please post them to the comments page

Do not post to ChaWiki content that is not available for distribution under a license compatible with the CC-BY license

ChaWiki uses the CC-BY license which means that all content on ChaWiki is available for re-use as long as it's attributed to ChaWiki. This means that you should not post content that is not available for distribution under this or a compatible license. It's fine to post public domain content.

Do not use LocalWiki to support illegal activity

We cannot support communities that exist to support illegal activities such as child pornography, drug smuggling, terrorism, baby eating, etc.

What to do if you want to do something that conflicts with these guidelines or if you see something that conflicts with these guidelines

If you see something that conflicts with these guidelines, edit the entry to remove the content that conflicts with these guidelines. It can be helpful to add a comment to your edit indicating why the content was removed (you can even add a link to this entry).

If you want to do something that conflicts with these guidelines, please note that ChaWiki is not the place to do it. If you do post content that's against our guidelines, it will be removed.
