The Meantime Coffee Co. is a student-run, nonprofit coffee shop located in the Campus Y at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

History

The Meantime Coffee Co. opened Sept. 12, 2016, only a few months after the closing of The Daily Grind, an independent coffee shop formerly located in UNC-CH’s Student Stores. Meantime was founded by former UNC-CH students Keegan McBride, Lauren Eaves and Scott Diekema.

Meantime is entirely student-run and provides on-campus employment experience for students to learn how to become baristas or business developers. Its executive team consists of five undergraduate students, and its current CEO is Hannah Hodge.

Menu Offerings

The Meantime Coffee Co. partners with Carrboro Coffee Roasters, a small batch roaster located in Carrboro, North Carolina. The coffee shop offers a variety of espresso-based drinks such as lattes, cortados and cappuccinos, as well as drip coffee, teas, hot chocolate and apple cider. Meantime also offers baked goods from The Sonder Market, a UNC-CH student-run food market.

Sustainability and Social Impact

The Meantime Coffee Co. has implemented measures to preserve the environment including its use of local and sustainable suppliers, introduction of a cashless payment system and use of compostable tableware.

As a nonprofit, Meantime reinvests its profits into student scholarships and grants. Continuing with the tradition of social justice at the Campus Y, the Meantime Coffee Co. released a statement on Sept. 25, 2017 in support of the UNC Center for Civil Rights following the UNC Board of Governors’ decision to prevent the Center from providing pro bono legal services.

Hours

The Meantime Coffee Co. is open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is closed on Saturday and Sunday.
