Coffee shop shut down due to unpaid taxes

Visitors to Perks Coffee & Tea on Perkins Road today found locked doors and a sign from police saying the business was shut down due to unpaid sales taxes. The popular neighborhood coffee shop was abruptly closed this morning. According to officials in the city-parish Sales Tax Department, owner David J. Cattar Sr. had a lien placed against him on May 6, 2010, for $22,500 in unpaid taxes. On Aug. 30, 2010, Cattar had a civil judgment in the amount of $18,818 come down against him. The Louisiana Workforce Commission placed a lien on the business Oct. 25 for $87.82. Once the liens and judgment are paid off, Perks will be able to re-open.
