Eishokey Uni-Cup is an annual sports event organized by the sports center of the RWTH Aachen University. It usually takes place sometime in December. Keep an eye out for flyers and posters!

The Uni-Cup is an ice-hockey  competition between three faculty teams, the Aachen Steelers (mechanical engineering),  E-Tec Lions (electrical engineering), and the Medical Strikers (medicine). It takes place in Tivoli Eissporthalle which is an ice rink in the north-east of Aachen, right next to all the other stadiums.

The game is extremely fun with the teams putting up a great game, cheerleading competitions, mascots and pep teams. There is probably no other sports event that is so similiar to an American football or basketball game. A lot of students however end up not remembering anything about the game because of the generous and relatively cheap amounts of beer.

Many students will dress up. Some mechanical engineers will dress up as penguins (their mascot) or as gears etc. Medicine students will usually dress up in their doctors overalls and form a green wall. And the electrical engineers... well, idk.

There is an aftergame party in Starfish, one of the largest discos in Aachen. Just show your ticket and you will be allowed to the party.

How to get tickets

Tickets are only about 10€ each. However, getting tickets can be very difficult.

  • The three participating faculties reserve a good portion of the tickets for their own students (about 550 each faculty). So if you are studying mechanical engineering, electrical engineering of medicine, you might be able to get a ticket through your faculty. The student body of your faculty will announce date, time and locations where the tickets will be sold. You are most likely going to get the information from the student representatives of your faculty (Fachschaft).
  • Be there early! Last time I got tickets, I was there at 7 am in the morning (they started selling tickets at 10) and there was already a huge line. Not surprising considering that RWTH has now (2014) more than 40000 students! Every year, there is rumors about at which location you are most likely to get a ticket. The most reliable manner to get a ticket however is just getting there early.
  • Be aware that you are only allowed to get two tickets! So don't plan to get tickets for all your friends!
  • When tickets are sold out you might be able to get a ticket from someone else. Ask your friends, Fachschaft or in facebook groups but prepare for higher prices!
  • If you are not in any of the participating faculties you might still be able to get a ticket at their selling locations. Sometimes, they will check student IDs, though...  Instead, you can also consider going to one of the selling locations of AStA (about 600 Tickets).

How to get to the stadium

  • ASEAG, the local bus company usually offers a special bus shuttle service to the ice rink starting at Bushof.
  • walk. Seriously, Aachen is not that big.
