Mathew Israel Gelfand was a recent graduate from medical school in Boston when he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. He came to Saranac Lake to cure in the early 1950s. His wife Sylvia lived on Church Street while he was curing. After treatment, he went on to a lifelong career as a physician. He and his wife had four children.

We mourn the passing of Dr. Mathew Israel Gelfand on August 11, 2015. Beloved husband of Sylvia, father of Jodi, Peter, Margo, Lauren, and grandfather of Ariel. He was a true giant of medicine who exuded compassion, kindness and love.
A brick in Mathew Gelfand's name has been dedicated by his children at the Saranac Laboratory Museum.
