Filter fields

You can filter the result set by providing the following query parameters:

  • name -- Filter by name, exact.
  • slug -- Filter by page slug. Supports the standard lookup types
  • region -- Filter by region. Allows for chained filtering on all of the filters available on the region resource, e.g. region__slug.

And the usual set of historical filter fields:

  • history_user - filter by the user resource of the editor, if user was logged in. Allows for chained filtering on all of the filters available on the user resource, e.g. history_user__username.
  • history_user_ip - filter by the IP address of the editor.
  • history_date - filter by history date. Supports the standard lookup types
  • history_type - filter by history type id, exact.

Ordering

You can order the result set by providing the ordering query parameter with the value of one of:

  • slug
  • history_date

You can reverse ordering by using the - sign, e.g. -slug.

height: 294px;\"><span style=\"width: 500px;\" class=\"image_caption\">Illustration 'C'</span></span></p>\n<p>\n\tKaroline and Gottlieb\u00a0<strong>LIEBELT</strong>'s first child was Johanne Louise (15 June 1848-29 March 1940) and she along with her husband\u00a0\u00a0Johann Gottlieb (21 April 1846-31 October 1923)\u00a0<strong>K</strong><strong>UCHEL\u00a0</strong>became the common denominator for this article. \u00a0</p>\n<p>\n\tI \u00a0began with this couple because they appear in \u00a0many of the photographs in John's collection. \u00a0Usually they are at the centre of a group photo surrounded by any number of their nine children and their partners. \u00a0'Johanne' Louise\u00a0<strong>LIEBELT</strong>\u00a0and her husband of 52years, \u00a0</p>\n<p>\n\tJohann 'Gottlieb'\u00a0<strong>KUCHEL</strong>, were both born near Hahndorf, South Australia, and were married in 1871, by Pastor Strempel, in the St Michael's Lutheran Church, Hahndorf.\u00a0 From now on they will be referred to as 'Johanne' and 'Gottlieb'.</p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n\t<span class=\"image_frame\"><img src=\"_files/F6DB471D-3A7F-48C4-9E45-FE32844B2B87_1_105_c.jpeg\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 278px;\"><span style=\"width: 200px;\" class=\"image_caption\">Johanne\u00a0<strong>LIEBELT</strong>\u00a01848-1940 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Gottlieb\u00a0<strong>KUCHEL</strong>\u00a01846-1923</span></span></p>\n<h3>\n\t<strong>The 'Zebra', 'Prince George' and the 'Herjeebhoy Rustonjee Patel' (known as the 'Patel').</strong></h3>\n<p>\n\tJohanne's parents had come out as children to the Province of South Australia, her mother, Karoline\u00a0<strong>LUBASCH </strong>and\u00a0her father, Gottlieb\u00a0<strong>LIEBELT </strong>were both children on the 'Zebra'.\u00a0 Their villages in Brandenburg, Prussia were separated by only 4.5kms, if they took the route through the fields. <em>(Illustration 'C')</em>\u00a0 Quite likely they already knew of each other before emigration. \u00a0There adventure together, began with their families on river barges down the Oder, through the waterways of bustling Berlin and up to the Port of Hamburg. \u00a0Such sights they never could have imagined, followed by a four month sea voyage\u00a0in 1838. \u00a0 \u00a0</p>\n<p>\n\tGottlieb's parents on the other hand, were adults, his father Gottfried 'Erdmann'\u00a0<strong>KUCHEL</strong>\u00a01812-24 Sept 1869, was 33yrs and his mother Johanne Dorothea Elisabeth\u00a0<strong>KUCHEL</strong>\u00a01811-16 May 1895, 34 years of age and they had 4 children when they arrived in September 1845 on the '<em>Herjeebhoy Rustonjee Patel</em>', \u00a0<em>(I will refer to this ship as 'the Patel'). \u00a0</em>Gottlieb was their first, of four more children, who were born in their new country. \u00a0As Gottlieb grew up he would have heard his parents talk of the ships that arrived in 1838 because his paternal grandparents (Georg\u00a0<strong>KUCHEL</strong>\u00a0&amp; Anna\u00a0<strong>SEIFFERT</strong>) &amp; three uncles (17, 20 &amp; 23 years of age) were all passengers on the '<em>Prince George</em>'.\u00a0</p>\n<p>\n\t\u00a0</p>\n<p>\n\t<span class=\"image_frame image_right\"><img src=\"_files/2F2390F1-702A-4D19-94EC-3903BA2024F6_4_5005_c.jpeg\" style=\"width: 444px; height: 246px;\"><span style=\"width: 200px;\" class=\"image_caption\">'Dorothea <strong>KUCHEL'</strong></span></span>Gottlieb's father, who I will refer to by his third name 'Erdmann', was the eldest of the four boys and would have been 26yrs of age when all the activities were happening in preparation for his 55 &amp; 51 year old parents &amp; his 3 siblings to begin their trip. \u00a0</p>\n<p>\n\tFor whatever reason, Erdmann, did not accompany his parents in 1838 on the 'Prince George'. \u00a0However he had married around that time (c1838) to his first cousin, and Dorothea\u00a0<strong>(KUCHEL)\u00a0</strong>had four baby girls born in \u00a01840, 1842, 1843 and 1845, named Louise, Dorothea, Eleonore and Anna Rosin. \u00a0On their voyage out on the '<em>Pate</em>l' \u00a02 yr old Eleonore did not survive the voyage, and possibly, Anna Rosin, had been born but also died on the ships voyage.\u00a0<em>(KUCHEL, Ships List). \u00a0\u00a0</em></p>\n<p>\n\t\u00a0When Gottlieb's parents &amp; two older sisters arrived, his uncles had been in South Australia for six years. \u00a0His grandfather (Georg\u00a0<strong>KUCHEL</strong>\u00a0b ca1783) had died seven months earlier but his grandmother (Anna Dorothea\u00a0<strong>SEIFFERT</strong>\u00a0b 1787c) was 59 yrs of age and was, possibly, living with one of her sons.</p>\n<h3>\n\t<strong>Family of Gottlieb Erdmann KUCHEL blamed for his premature death in 1869.</strong></h3>\n<p>\n\t<span class=\"image_frame image_right\"><img src=\"_files/A7F0BB11-C646-49D8-BF3C-2EA71FC6A2E4_4_5005_c.jpeg\" style=\"width: 120px; '\u00a0</em></p>\n<p>\n\tGottfried Erdmann\u00a0<strong>KUCHEL</strong>\u00a0died in 1869 as a result of an accident at Mt Barker, when he fell from his horse, two years before his first son, Gottlieb, (his first Australian born child), was married.</p>\n<p>\n\tOn that spring evening when Erdmann fell from his horse, 20 September, near the 'Oakfield Hotel', he apparently appeared intoxicated, (or was it as a result of a head injury and cerebral bleed) and was taken inside the hotel to sleep the night. \u00a0His sons, Gottlieb 23years and \u00a0Friedrich 19 years came with a cart to collect him the next day, Sunday. While he had no obvious injuries, he was very quiet and sleepy. Sometime between Sunday and Tuesday his wife and one of his lads thought he 'seemed unconscious' and help was called. \u00a0\u00a0</p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>Erdmann dies:</strong>\u00a0 So a Mr de Valluois of Balhannah was called and prescribed 'Seidlitz powder and Epsom salts, and ordered cold water to be applied to the head and chest'. \u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"\">Over the next few days till Friday he became unresponsive, neither eating, drinking or talking, and was probably incontinent, until he ceased breathing altogether.\u00a0</span></p>\n<p>\n\t<em>\"The deceased came to his death from the effects of a fall from his horse on the 20th instant; that the relatives of the deceased are to blame for not having called in the assistance of a duly qualified medical man, such a one being in the immediate neighbourhood; that the deceased was improperly treated.\"\u00a0</em>Quote from Trove.....</p>\n<p>\n\t<em>\u200b'On 20 September, 1869, Gottfried was badly injured in a fall from a horse in Mount Barker (near the old primary school on Adelaide Road) and he died on Friday the 24th. \u00a0At 4pm on Sunday the 26th, he was buried by Pastor A. Fiedler in the cemetery of the St\u00a0Johannes Lutheran Church at Hahndorf (at the rear of the manse of the present St Paul's Lutheran Church)' (KUCHEL pge 6)</em></p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"\">Erdmann was 57 years of age, had been in South Australia for 24 years and his wife Dorothea was about the same age. \u00a0Unfortunately there are no photographs of Erdmann found to date.</span></p>\n<ul>\n\t<li>\n\t\t<strong>Oakfield Hotel</strong>: A Scottish farmer, Lachlan <strong>MACFARLAN</strong> had built the 'Oakfield Hotel' in 1861 close to the road in Mount Barker and he supplied passing traffic and the \u00a0coach trade on its way to the eastern states via Wellington on the Murray River. This hotel was later incorporated into the summer residence of Robert &amp; Joanna <strong>BARR SMITH</strong>, known as Auchendarroch. The original stone work of the 'Oakfield Hotel' can still be determined. \u00a0In 1869 Lachlan was 63 years of age, all of his 11 children had been born, and from the following year he leased out the Hotel to other publicans. \u00a0Lachlan's wife, (Anna Dorothea 'Luise') was 13 years of age on the 'Zebra' in 1839, and one of the 7 daughters of Gottfried <strong>LUBASCH,</strong> Waterloo Veteran and first hotelier in Hahndorf. \u00a0The young Gottlieb <strong>KUCHEL,\u00a0</strong>was soon to marry (1871) the niece of 'Luise'.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>\n\t<em>See Local Wiki: 'Lubasch and his 7 daughters'.</em></p>\n<p>\n\t\u00a0</p>\n<h3>\n\t<strong>Dorothea survives her husband Erdmann KUCHEL, by</strong>\u00a0<strong>26 years.</strong></h3>\n<p>\n\t<span class=\"image_frame image_left\"><img src=\"_files/A430F821-C165-40D3-8E16-008A76FB9F0C.jpeg\" style=\"width: 500px; his son-in-law Erdmann\u00a0<strong>KUCHEL</strong>. \u00a0I have no information about who Daniel was married to.\u00a0 \u00a0Seventy year old Daniel is described on the\u00a0<em>'Ships List'</em>\u00a0as coming from Lochow (see Illustration C). \u00a0Erdmann\u00a0<strong>KUCHEL</strong>, has been described in\u00a0<em>'Ships List'\u00a0</em>as coming from Langmeil,( see map above). \u00a0 The same\u00a0<em>'Ship's List'</em>\u00a0also states that Daniel, was among\u00a0<em>'eleven persons',</em>\u00a0who died at sea,\u00a0<em>'mostly old men, and very young children.' \u00a0SAGHS has a Death Index entry.......</em></p>\n<p>\n\t<em>There is evidence in the form of a death\u00a0certificate\u00a0 that a Daniel \u00a0<strong>KUCHEL</strong>\u00a0died in Hahndorf at 83 yrs of age on 27 January 1857. \u00a0That means he was born c1774, the same age as the Daniel who had apparently died on the 'Patel'.</em></p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">\n\t\u00a0</h2>\n<h3>\n\t\u00a0Johanna and Gottlieb moved to Section 3913 Hd of Kuitpo in 1878. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0</h3>\n<p>\n\t<span class=\"image_frame image_left\"><img src=\"_files/map1%202.jpeg\" style=\"width: 300px; it seems likely that he was employed as a shepherd in the early days. \u00a0</em><em>Gottlieb and Johanne Caroline\u00a0<strong>LUBASCH</strong>\u00a0were married on September 9, 1847; the ceremony was\u00a0conducted by Pastor A.L.C.\u00a0<strong>KAVEL</strong>\u00a0in the school room at Hahndorf. \u00a0The witnesses to the marriage were Gottlieb\u00a0<strong>KUCHEL</strong>\u00a0and Christian\u00a0<strong>ZILM'\u00a0</strong></em></p>\n<p class=\"indent2\">\n\tThis Gottlieb\u00a0<strong>KUCHEL</strong>\u00a0was probably Erdmann's youngest brother who had come out on the\u00a0<em>Prince George</em>\u00a0and who he may have named his first son after, the Gottlieb\u00a0<strong>KUCHEL</strong>\u00a0of this article. The\u00a0<strong>LIEBELT's</strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>KUCHEL's</strong>\u00a0were possibly already friends, from knowing them in Lochow, not \u00a0far from Nickern, or from their shared experiences in Hahndorf \u00a0(JBH author/researcher).</p>\n<p class=\"indent1\">\n\t<em>'Gottlieb and his wife were among the earliest settlers at Friedrichstadt - it is not known exactly when he settled at Friedrichstadt but as his nick-name was 'Squatter' it seems likely that be 'squatted' on his\u00a0selection before he formally took up the land. \u00a0On December 5, 1850, he became the\u00a0registered owner of Section 3903 of the Hundred of Kuitpo. \u00a0this 80 acre section was purchased from Johann Friedrich\u00a0<strong>PAECH\u00a0</strong>of Gr\u00fcnthal for 80 pound. \u00a0Access was allowed to other settlers to the water pools on this property. \u00a0On this section Gottlieb built his first home of mud, straw and slabs.</em></p>\n<p class=\"indent1\">\n\t<em>This home stood until 1912 when it was destroyed in a disastrous bushfire. \u00a0The home had been replace earlier by an all brick home - one of the first in the Hahndorf area to be built entirely of brick. Over the years Gottlieb purchased and leased additional properties. In February 1856 he paid 300 pound for 30 acres, part of section 3899. \u00a0On October 16, 1866 he took over the lease of sections 3897, 3895 and 3884 and part of section 3896 in the Hundred of Kuitpo from Gottlob\u00a0<strong>SCHULZ.</strong></em></p>\n<p class=\"indent1\">\n\t<em>Gottlieb leased from the Incorporated Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, sections 3696, 3733, 5007 and parts of sections 3732 and 3698 in the Hundred of Macclesfield. \u00a0The\u00a0</em><em>annual rental was 20\u00a0pound per year plus 1/- per acre which was cultivated. \u00a0The land had to be cultivated within 4 years.</em></p>\n<p class=\"indent1\">\n\t<em>Gottlieb was a farmer; it appears likely that he also did some shearing. \u00a0Much of the land mentioned above is still in the possession of members of the family. \u00a0On May 11, 1893, Gottlieb passed away at the age of 69 years. \u00a0His widow attained the age of 75\u00a0years, passing away on May 30, 1902. In addition he received farming\u00a0blocks numbered 21,25,36, 51c and 66b. (Now 59, 63, 86, 105 and 138). \u00a0On September 16, Christian became the registered owner of this land; previously it had been vested in the original trustees of Hahndorf, Christian and Johann Christian Erdmann <strong>JAENSCH.</strong>\u00a0 Christian built his humble home of wattle and daub on this property. \u00a0It consisted of two rooms and a porch. \u00a0In addition, a cellar of similar construction was built somewhat removed from the house. \u00a0Portion of this cellar still stands. \u00a0In the door of the old homestead was a spear mark where a spear struck into the door after an aboriginal had thrown it at Maria Elisabeth as she fled into the house. \u00a0She only just made it to safety.'</em></p>\n<p class=\"indent1\">\n\t<em>'In 1843 Christian had 3 acres of wheat under cultivation as well as 1/2 acre of potatoes. \u00a0He owned 6 cattle and 2 pigs. \u00a0After their marriage his two sons left the Hahndorf township and took up land at Friedrichstadt. \u00a0His daughter Eleonore and her husband Carl <strong>FAEHRMANN</strong> lived on the old homestead.
